Ik kwam in een blogpost van Steve Rubel het woord Junto tegen. Ik had geen idee wat het betekende, maar gelukkig redt Wikipedia me:
The Junto was a club established in 1727 by Benjamin Franklin for mutual improvement in Philadelphia. Also known as the Leather Apron Club, its purpose was to debate questions of morals, politics, and natural philosophy, and to exchange knowledge of business affairs.
Franklin organized a group of friends to provide a structured forum of mutual improvement. […] The members of the Junto were drawn from diverse occupations and backgrounds, but they all shared a spirit of inquiry and a desire to improve themselves, their community, and to help others. Among the original members were printers, surveyors, a cabinetmaker, a clerk, and a bartender.
[…] This gathering included prominent merchants who met informally to drink and discuss the business of the day. Franklin’s congenial ways attracted many unique and learned individuals, and from these, he selected the members for the Junto.
Wat een geweldig idee en initiatief! Eigenlijk lijkt het een beetje op de Open Coffee die ik met Mark de Kock en Ton Wesseling in 2008 in Utrecht begon. Natuurlijk is er in Silicon Valley een eigentijdse Junto, maar ik kan me deze vorm ook in Nederland voorstellen. Eigenlijk lijkt het op veel van de netwerkborrels en bijeenkomsten die er in de techindustrie zijn, maar dan nog iets strakker georganiseerd. Ik ben benieuwd of er iemand opstaat om een Utrecht Junto te starten!
