Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the co-founders of Instagram, announced Artifact, a news app that uses machine learning and algorithmic recommendations to serve a feed of stories to readers.

Instagram’s oprichter neemt een afslag om een sociaal netwerk rondom tekst te ontwikkelen. Aangezien Instagram de genesis was van visuele sociale netwerken, ben ik benieuwd wat dit gaat doen. Ik heb me ingeschreven voor de beta. De inzet van machine learning en algoritmes… het kan eng klinken, maar algoritmes hoeven niet per se iets slechts te zijn.

Wat een herkenbaar moment van Jamie Todd Rubin. Al je documenten, projecten, foto’s, media, verspreid over allerhande harddisks, folders en services. Hoe ruim je dat op? Hij legt stap voor stap uit hoe hij de keuzes maakt en waarom. Met uiteindelijk dat mooie gevoel: "Everything was in its place, and everything had a place to go. De berichten over de dip in gebruikers op Mastodon missen een belangrijk punt volgens Ernie Smith (en ik denk dat hij een goed punt heeft):

Mastodon, and fediverse technologies like it, are doing something significantly harder than just building yet another social network with central ownership and a single point of failure. We owe it to this work to not measure it like it’s just another social network, because it’s trying to do something harder—it’s trying to build a foundation for social media that doesn’t have to be commercial.

Door nieuwe communicatie te meten met oudere meetinstrumenten, mis je een relevante blik op de toekomst. Is het aantal dagelijkse gebruikers echt relevant? Of zijn andere metrics van dienst hier? En welke zijn dat dan?

Thanks to protocols and W3C recommendations I can like, bookmark, annotate anything on my own site. I can send out a notification I liked what you wrote. You can decide to receive this notification, moderate it or publish it on your own site. That’s up to you. As it is on Micro.blog. Whether that’s harmful, I don’t know. Are hitparades harmful? Top 10 lists?
